Risk Management
Risk Management
The Foundation of Everything
Risk management isn't a feature — it's the foundation the entire system is built on.
Every strategy, every bot, every decision in Ascension starts with the same question: what can go wrong, and how do we survive it? Markets are unpredictable. Strategies fail. Black swans happen. The goal isn't to avoid all losses — that's impossible. The goal is to ensure no single loss, no single bad day, no single catastrophic event can take you out of the game.
Survive today to trade tomorrow. That's the only rule that matters.
System-Level Protections
These aren't suggestions — they're enforced by the system.
Position Limits
No single trade consumes an outsized portion of the portfolio. The system enforces maximum position sizes regardless of how confident the signal appears. Conviction is great; overexposure kills.
Portfolio Allocation Caps
No single bot or strategy dominates the portfolio. Capital is distributed across approaches, ensuring that one failing strategy doesn't drag down everything.
Stop-Loss Discipline
Every position has a predefined exit point for losses. Stops aren't suggestions — they execute automatically. Hope is not a risk management strategy.
Reserve Capital
A portion of capital remains uninvested at all times. Dry powder provides flexibility for opportunities and cushion for drawdowns. The system never goes all-in.
Regime Awareness
Bots don't trade blindly into unfavorable conditions. When the regime classifier detects high-risk environments, strategies scale back exposure or sit out entirely. Sometimes the best trade is no trade.
User-Level Controls
Bot renters aren't locked into one-size-fits-all settings. You control:
Risk Parameters Set your own position sizing limits, maximum drawdown thresholds, and allocation caps. The system respects your risk tolerance, not just its defaults.
Asset Restrictions Specify which assets the bot can and cannot trade. If you don't want exposure to certain tokens or sectors, exclude them.
Pause and Override You can pause bot activity at any time. You remain in control of your capital — the bot is a tool, not a dictator.
Your Keys, Your Funds Ascension connects to your exchange account via API. Your capital never leaves your exchange. We can't withdraw your funds — the API permissions don't allow it.
What We Can't Protect Against
Honesty matters. Here's what risk management doesn't cover:
Market Risk Markets can crash. Crypto can drop 50% in a day. TradFi can gap down on news. Risk management limits damage; it doesn't prevent losses entirely.
Strategy Risk Every strategy has conditions where it underperforms. Trend-following loses in chop. Mean reversion loses in strong trends. Diversification helps, but no approach works in all conditions.
Exchange Risk If your exchange gets hacked, goes insolvent, or freezes withdrawals, your funds on that exchange are at risk. This is true whether you're using Ascension or not.
Technical Risk Systems can fail. APIs can go down. Bugs can happen. We build for reliability, but perfection doesn't exist in software.
Regulatory Risk Crypto regulation is evolving. Rules can change. What's permitted today may not be tomorrow. This is an industry-wide risk.
The Principles
Ascension's approach to risk comes down to a few core beliefs:
Survival trumps optimization. A system that survives bad periods will eventually thrive in good ones. A system that blows up chasing maximum returns is gone forever.
Compounding requires consistency. Small, steady gains compound into significant growth. Big wins followed by big losses compound into nothing.
Transparency enables trust. You can't manage risk you can't see. Every trade is logged. Every decision is explained. The system is legible by design.
Automation removes emotion. The hardest part of risk management is following the rules when it hurts. Automated stops execute without hesitation. That's the point.
Disclosures
Trading involves substantial risk of loss. You can lose some or all of your invested capital. Never trade with money you can't afford to lose.
Past performance does not guarantee future results. Historical returns, backtests, and paper trading results are not predictive of future performance.
Ascension provides tools, not financial advice. We build and operate trading systems. We do not provide personalized investment advice. Your trading decisions are your own.
You are responsible for your own due diligence. Understand the strategies, the risks, and your own financial situation before participating.
Consult qualified professionals. For personal financial, tax, or legal advice, consult licensed professionals in your jurisdiction.
